The Library Work Study program is designed for new library professionals with a background in the arts. This is a hands-on experience that allows individuals an opportunity to work with the Art Librarian to receive direct mentorship on cataloguing, collection development, collection management, and reference services. Candidates will receive a general overview of the activities of the library with introductions to all aspects of the library.
This role compliments studies in arts librarianship and will primarily focus on activities which fall in line with the participants learning objectives and ongoing projects of the library. A specific project will be the cataloguing and assessment of The Banff Centre Librarys collection of artists publications (artists books, book art, zines, multiples and ephemera).
Learning opportunities also arise through attendance at lectures, workshops and events related to arts programming at The Banff Centre. Benefits to participants include enhanced practical librarianship skills, as well as opportunities for critical thinking, problem-solving and learning from an experienced library team. In addition to the practical experience component of the program, participants will have the opportunity to work on personal research activities as outlined in their learning objectives and project proposal.
Work Study placements are appropriate for recent graduates of Master in Library and Information Science programs who also possess a degree or have experience in the arts. This is an opportunity for a new professional to gain experience and expand and develop their careers and capabilities. This program requires full-time commitment.
Program Fee: $201 per week (covered by financial assistance)
Stipend: $425 per week
This stipend is not specifically linked to work performed but is intended to enable participants to pursue the overall learning objectives.
About The Banff Centre Work Study Program
Our Work Study programs offer an internship-style training opportunity that is ideal for emerging artists, technical practitioners, and arts administrators. In the Work Study program, participants work with a Banff Centre staff or faculty mentor well-experienced in the field to develop knowledge and skills for a specific career in the arts.
Many Work Study participants are recent graduates of post-secondary programs, or are in the early stages of their careers; however, the program is also beneficial for those wanting to learn new skills or those seeking a career change.
The Work Study program is usually several months to a year-long and offers participants a full scholarship to cover the program fee, a stipend, subsidized meals on campus, and the possibility for subsidized shared housing.
Work studies are responsible for their own room and board costs, however, they are eligible for housing (based on availability). Current rates for this accommodation are $8.06 / day (shared) or $16.12 / day (single) and will be deducted from the participants stipend payment.
